PROJECTS

Waterproofing the Floor for Better Health & Hygiene (ELPIS DORMITORY)

Karunar dormitory was founded by Mrs. Hae Htoo in 2004. It is located in Mae Pa, Tak Province, Thailand. In 2013, ex-Wide Horizons students built 2 new dorms for girls and boys through the funding from Room to Grow. Currently, there are 55 students and 5 teachers living in the dorms.
The dorm’s mission is to provide a safe shelter and good opportunity to study for unparented and underprivileged children.
In these dorms, they are facing problems with water seeping through the floor in the raining season 4 months in a year. According to 2 engineers we consulted the construction of the dormitory building was badly advised by the previous engineer, but according to the dorm supervisor it is because the previous organizers and engineer did not budget for the materials carefully.  As a result, the floor was built thinly on the same level as the ground. This causes the floor to be damp, dirty and infested with insects. To solve these problems, they lay linoleum to cover the damp floor but it is very easy to tear and difficult to sweep the floor. Moreover, different kinds of insects would stay under the linoleum such as ants and snails. Sometimes, when students wake up, they notice insect bites on their body and fall sick with illnesses like fever and cough. The number of illnesses has increased in this year compared to last year.
Therefore, Wide Horizons students are proposing to pave the cement floor and lay tiles to provide a waterproof floor in February, 2016. As a result the floor will be dry and they can sleep comfortably. Furthermore, they can maintain hygiene and the students’ illness rate will be decreased.
To implement this project, we are requesting 49,570 Baht to buy good quality materials to use for paving the floor with tiles, hiring engineer and workers.

Building a Safe & Hygienic Kitchen (WIDE HORIZONS SCHOOL)

Wide Horizons school (WH) was established in 2006 by the Burmese Migrant Worker Education Committee (BMWEC) and World Education (WE). The school is located in Mae Sot, Tak, Thailand. Each year, WH school accepts 24 students from different ethnicities who come from different organizations.
The school’s mission is to improve the capacity for young adults to work effectively in different CBOs inside Burma and the Thai-Burma border.
Currently, WH students are facing problems with their kitchen room such as; leaking water in rainy season, and bad smell from the drain that is inside the kitchen. Moreover, the kitchen floor is also broken, and the posts and beams are decayed. Therefore, it is not comfortable and hygienic when students cook, eat and clean the floor. Moreover, they worry that the building will collapse.
For that reason, WH students are writing a proposal to rebuild the kitchen in April-May, 2016. The new kitchen building will be sustainable for at least 5 years and will serve 120 upcoming students. To implement the kitchen building project, we require 98,872 Baht to pay for the workers and construction materials.

Building a Safe Fence for Better Security (HSA THOO LEI SCHOOL)

Hsa Thoo Lei School was founded by Naw Paw Ray in 1999 with 25 children. Currently, she is a school director and chairperson of BMWEC. The school is located in Mae Sot, Tak Province, Thailand. There are 614 students and 43 teachers in 2015 – 2016 academic year. The students come from different ethnicities such as Karen, Karenni, Kayan, Chin, Burman, Mon, Pa ‘O’, Kachin, Shan and Muslin.
The school's mission is to provide opportunities for those children who lost their right to have equal education to study as children nature, and to resolve the design of risk to mutuality of peace as human nature.
Currently, Hsa Thoo Lei students and teachers facing with lack of security because there is no fully completed fence around the school. According to headmistress, Naw Hsa Eh, one of Grade 11 male student have punched by outside people. Moreover, one of the teacher lap top, students saving money box and school materials such as chairs, brooms, books and other have lost. The strangers often enter directly into office without permission and they often saw strangers and students' parents or relative come to called and talked with students without permission. They worried that those outside people will create problems to students, teachers and school. According to school a teacher, students go outside to visit other places and bought snacks without permission. So, it is very difficult for teachers to control them and teach them lesson. Students are lack of focusing in lesson. They failed the exam and they cannot attend the new Grades.
For this reason, I am proposing to rebuild the cement fence to provide safe security for students and teachers in May, 2016. As a result, the cement fence will be fully complemented with two main doors gate. The outside people cannot enter directly in school compound.  So, Students and teachers will have good security and students and teachers can study or teach safely and comfortably. Furthermore, school materials will not lose anymore and they will have enough school materials. Students go outside to visit other places and bought snack will be reduce. Moreover, they will more concentrate in lesson and teacher easy to control them.  As a result, they will pass the exam with good marks to attend new grades.
To implement this project, I am requesting 84,150 Baht to buy good quality of materials to build the safe and strong fence, hiring engineer and workers.
